The Trans-Cordillera is one of the more popular treks in Bolivia. On this itinerary, we only trek a part of the Cordillera Real. We will cross several passes allowing you spectacular views of the Cordillera. You will see beautiful valleys, glacial lakes, and wildlife. You will also have the opportunity to meet indigenous communities that are mostly untouched by modern society. The altitudes of the camps go from 4500m / 14,763ft to 4700m / 15,420ft. The highest point we reach trekking up is 5300m / 17,388ft. Each day we walk from 4 to 8 hours. At the end of the trek, you will have achieved the perfect acclimatization to attempt the beautiful climb of Pequeno Alpamayo (5370m / 17,620ft) and Huayna Potosi (6088m / 19,973ft) with a UIAGM certified guide.

Day by Day Itinerary
Day 1: LA PAZ (3600m) - LAKE QUTA QUTIA (4450m) - LAGUNA AJWANI (4600m)
In the morning, we drive out to Lake Quta Qutia. Our drive takes us through the city of Al Alto. After leaving the city of El Alto we keep heading north on the highway until we reach a road heading up one of the valleys to the base of the mountains in the Cordillera Real. Once we reach Lago Quta Qutia we have some lunch and start out trek. We have a short climb to a small pass. From the pass, we can see out next camp across the valley. After the pass, we have steep downhill to the bottom where we cross the valley and have a rising traverse to Laguan Ajwani. Our gear is taken by vehicle to our camp we will have time to check out the area and the lakes nearby. 3-hour drive and 3 to 4-hour trekLodging: Camp Laguna Ajwani (4600m/15,091ft)

Day 2: LAGUNA AJWAÑI - JURI QUTA (4500m)
After a good breakfast, we start our trek. We have to cross two passes today. At the first pass we will get our first views of the Cabeza de Condor (5648m), the Matterhorn of Bolivia. Crossing the second we have a short downhill to our camp next the lake Juri Quta. 5 to 6-hour trek.Lodging: Camp Juri Quta (4500m/14,763ft)

Day 3: JURI QUTA - CONDORIRI (4700m)
We have two options today. We can go over Austria Peak (5300m). This route brings us very close to the Cabeza de Condor (5648m), the Matterhorn of Bolivia. Or via one easy pass. The camp is in beautiful surroundings next to a lake with great views of the mountains and if we are lucky, we can have fresh trout for dinner. 5 to 6-hour trek.Lodging: Camp Condoriri (4700m/15,420ft)

Day 4: CONDORIRI – PEQUENO ALPAMAYO SUMMIT – CONDORIRI
An early start in the morning for our climb of Pequeño Alpamayo, after one hour of walking on a trail we reach the glacier, from here we will need to put our crampons on, and head up the glacier. First we have to climb Mt Tarija (5200m), once on the summit of Tarija we need to drop down a little way on the other side. The last 100m of climbing is good fun on a ridge. We have great views of Huayna Potosi (6088m). Same route back down to base camp. 7 – 9-hour climbLodging: Camp Condoriri (4700m/15,420ft)

Day 5: CONDORIRI - PASO ZONGO (4700m) HUAYNA POTOSI BASE CAMP
We have an easy walk back down where we meet our transport to take us to Paso zongo. Here we will spend the night in one of the Refugio’s. Mules take our equipment back down to the valley. 1 to 2-hour trek and 2 to 3-hour driveLodging: Hut in Huayna Potosi Base Camp. Shared accommodation. (4500m/14,763ft)

Day 6: HUAYNA POTOSI BASE CAMP – HUAYNA POTOSI HIGH CAMP
In the morning we will meet the porters to take our camp equipment up to the high camp. We will walk through the rocks and moraine, and we will spend the night in the Refugio just below the snow line. In the evening we will prepare for the next day’s climbing. 2 to 4-hour trekLodging: Hut in Huayna Potosi High Camp. Shared accommodation. (5200m/17,060ft)

Day 7:
We have an early start in the morning. We will leave around 1 am in the morning. The climb starts on the glacier, will start with our crampons on, and the rest of our climbing gear. The climb is mostly following a trail on the glacier. We have 2 steep sections, one at around 5600m, called the Pala Chica. The trail goes through a snow and ice wall. Once through this part we keep following the trail on the glacier up to 6000m. From this point we can see the summit above as. The last section to the summit is great climbing on an exposed ridge. From the summit we can see from Illimani (6439m) to Illampu (6368m). After we take our photo shot on top, we head back down the same way to high camp. Once back at high camp we have a short rest and pack our gear. We then head back down to base camp to meet our transport back to La Paz.
