“A “Chile” ChristmasI booked a 13 day trip with ChileMontana to the Atacama desert and Ojos Del Salado; at 6,893m its the highest active volcano in the world. Having done Everest base camp and Kilimanjaro my target was not the summit of Ojos but just to get above 6,000m altitude. For logistics convenience I joined a group of 8 other climbers who were aiming for the summit, and what a great mix of people they turned out to be.When I booked I somehow knew ChileMontana would be with a good outfit and I wasn’t disappointed. The owner Vivianne answered my emails whatever time of the day it was, my queries about hotel and travel arrangements and trip details were all quickly answered and it was no surprise that it all turned out just as she planned it.On Christmas Eve we set off from the seaside town of Bahia Inglesa for a 6 hour drive across the Maricunga salt plains to a disused borax mine at Pedernales where we camped for the night. The next morning to stretch our legs we climbed to the summit of Cerro Dona Ines at just over 5,000m. From there it was on to Laguna Verde to set up base camp, a magical place except for the camp Loo which was perched on a ledge overlooking the lake and in full view of all the people at the lakeside. Personal dignity had to be sacrificed to visit the “Room with a View”!What took us all by surprise however was the extremes in temperature; daytime it was in the mid 30’s C but when the sun went down it very rapidly dropped to Zero, and by midnight it was somewhere between -10C and -15C. We had been warned we had to cope with extreme temperatures and they were not wrong, Brass Monkeys comes to mind! After a few more climbs to acclimatise that usually ended with a dip into the thermal springs on the shore of the lake we pushed on to the Atacama refuge camp on Ojos Del Salada arriving there on New Year’s Eve where the wind rose and the temperature fell, and fell seriously! After a few days holed up at the refuge we were at last able to get climbing again and I’m pleased to say that I reached an altitude of 6,166m -well exceeding my 6,000m target – and six of the other climbers reached the summit, well done to all of them. However we wouldn’t have achieved our personal goals if we’d not been with a well equipped outfit and our experienced guides Roberto and Eduardo. They were always ready to give encouragement and look after our safety. including making daily oxygen checks. Nor would we have succeeded without the culinary talent of our Camp Manager/Cook Carlos who kept us well fed with great food, not to mention the champagne which mysteriously appeared for our New Year’s Eve celebrations. Thank you Carlos (I won’t tell Vivianne),The highlight of the trip for me was obviously exceeding 6,000m altitude, an added and unexpected highlight however was the Atacama night sky. The starlight was simply breathtaking and no description I can give will do it justice, you have to see it for yourself so Go For It!Thank you Vivianne and your great ChileMontana team for the wonderful experience.JimMember of the Ojos del Salado Expedition Fixed departure 24th of December 2017Mountain Guide: Eduardo UnzuetaBase Camp Manager: Juan Carlos Briceño”
“Atacama trip QC-2 April 2017Juan-Carlos and Willi really made this trip great for us. They were extremely knowledgeable and constantly thinking about what we would find most interesting/entertaining. The food while camping was exceptional considering the restraints, for us the camping portion of the trip was probably our favourite part as this was really different from other trips we have done. JC and Willi were always enthusiastic and happy to answer our questions and flexible with the itinerary to allow us to see everything we wanted to see. The logistics all worked well, the trip seemed well thought out and we were very comfortable at all times. All in all it was a wonderful experience and we would definitely consider doing something similar again. Chile is a beautiful country and this trip definitely allowed us to see some of the best of it.Laura KennedyMember of the Atacama trip Fixed departure date 21st of April 2017Guide: Willi LuhmanBase camp manager: Juan Carlos Briceño”
“Atacama trip QC-2 March 2017Hi Vivianne,I just want to say thanks for a fantastic trip. Martin was a terrific guide–I loved his desire to show us places off the beaten path, away from the tourists. His knowledge of the area, of history, and of the geology, flora, and fauna of the region were invaluable and wonderful. Juan Carlos was also great–wish I spoke Spanish so I could have gotten to know him better! If you’re interested in more detailed feedback, let me know. For now, please know how happy I was with the trip.Best,Steve BraunGuide: Martin RihsBase camp manager: Juan Carlos Briceño”
“Ojos del Salado expedition March 2017With such an international climbing group, with varied skills, ages, and experience at altitude – the Roberto, Mario, and Carlos truly went above and beyond for everyone to reach their personal best and limits without risking their personal safety and wellbeing – the mark of a great guide. The itinerary was perfect and the slight adjustments magnificently made to maximize our summit success. Every detail was sensational thought out making for a seamless trip. I could not be more impressed with the patience, warmth, kindness, and knowledge Roberto, Mario and Carlos provided throughout this once in a lifetime adventure and exploration of the Atacama and Ojos Del Salado.Andrew HughesExpedition members of the Ojos del Salado Expedition, Fixed Departure date 12th of February 2017Guides: Roberto Gomez, Mario PerezBase camp manager: Juan Carlos Briceño”
“Ojos del Salado Mountaineering Expedition Exercise DRAGON CHILEAN VOLCANOThe team that were assembled to look after us during our stay were excellent. They quickly understood the group dynamic and practiced their English as we practiced our Spanish. When difficult decisions about the expedition needed to be made I felt fully included in the process.JC was a top base camp manager/driver/chef, throughout the trip the team constantly commented on the high quality of the food and looked forward to evening meals. On the mountain, Roberto always set a good pace for the group and Mario was available to offer assistance and route advice when required. All of the long drives were fine and didn’t cause us any concern. This was brilliant trip that was well organized and fun, I’m sure this atmosphere was key in allowing us to achieve our goal.I am writing a Post Exercise Report for the Army and am giving Chile Montana a very strong recommendation for future British Military expeditions to also use. On top of the excellent staff on the trip, Vivianne was exceptionally helpful with my planning.Thank you all.Colin KingshottExpedition leader of the EDCV Ojos del Salado Expedition, January February 2017Guides: Roberto Saenz, Mario PerezBase camp manager: Juan Carlos Briceño”
“Ojos del Salado expedition February 2017Hi Vivianne,Just wanted to send a you a thank note. The best experience ever. We didn’t make it to the top of Ojos but experienced a 6000m plus (San Francisco) it was something else! The super guides Roberto and Mario helped a lot on the descent and our first reaction was: ‘Never again…the shoes go on Ebay!’ Now we reconsidered because it was one of the best trips we ever made (once again, partly because of the professional attitude of your crew). The boots will stay with us and within 3 or 4 years I will make another attempt. The top wasn’t the drive for us this time, more the experience of just being there. San Francisco showed us we are not ready yet, so we decided to help out with carrying equipment down from Tejos, we just enjoyed to be there for the team. Can’t forget Carlos as well for the great food and looking out for everyone.Once again many thanks to you and the crew of Chilemontana…trip of a life time!Best regards,Martin and MarieExpedition members of the Ojos del Salado Expedition, Fixed Departure date 12th of February 2017Guides: Roberto Gomez, Mario PerezBase camp manager: Juan Carlos Briceño”
“Ojos First Summit of the Season 2017!December 2016 – January 2017Hello, Vivianne,Thanks for the wonderful expedition! All staff and clients are good persons, so we enjoyed very much. And we are happy that all of us climbed the summit. In my case, the acclimatization was really good, but the summit day was rather hard. I couldn’t follow the others, so it was a good choice for me to take the private option.Y.Fujimoto JapanMember of the Ojos del Salado Expedition, Fixed Departure date 25th of December 2016Guides: Hugo Ayaviri, Rolando Tarque, Mario PerezBase camp manager: Juan Carlos Briceño”
