El Morado National Park Hike

Easy day hike through this small national park located in the upper part of the Cajón del Maipo, surrounded by the majestic 4,000m peaks of the Andes mountain range.

We start early, at 7.30 am, from your hotel and drive past San José to Baños Morales. From there we enter the park and start the easy hike through the impressive canyon.

Our first stop is the Laguna Morales, where we have a nice lunch and enjoy the Andean scenery. After lunch, we walk for about one more hour to the foothills of Cerro San Francisco and its impressive dirty glacier. Here, you can take your time to explore the ice caves carved in the glacier, take pictures and enjoy the fresh mountain air.

The stunning scenery is dominated by two mountains, the Cerro El Morado (4,674m), a beautiful pyramid that is famous among Chilean climbers due to its difficulty, and the more accessible summit of the Mirador del Morado (3,883m).

The hike back down will take another couple of hours. Once back to the car, you can decide whether or not to stop for a drink at the Refugio Alemán, the German hut that provides accommodation for mountaineers from all over the world that come to climb the highest summits in this part of the Andes.
