Clothing for traveling to Patagonia

Below, you will find a reference list of clothing and equipment for your trip to Patagonia, Chile, and Argentina. Please note that this is an indicative list of available options that will provide you with comfort and safety during your trip. Due to the wide variety of fabrics, patterns and options on the market and the varying nature of personal preferences, it is impossible to provide more specific information. However, we hope this list gives you a good idea of what to bring with you on this trip. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you need further information or if you still have any questions about this topic.

The fundamentals

The widely used and universally accepted system today is the layered system. It is based on the concept of using the first layer of underwear, which keeps moisture away from the skin, a second layer whose mission is to provide warmth and a third layer that protects from wind, rain and cold from the outside. This concept was developed by the Norwegian company Helly Hansen in 1986 when polypropylene and fleece garments had already been invented. And it was also the birth of a waterproof and breathable material: the Goretex membrane. We will use this concept to recommend a foolproof equipment list for traveling in the Atacama Desert. Before we detail the items, you should include in your luggage, we will look a little deeper into the topic of layers.

The first layer

It is our underwear, and its fundamental function is to prevent our skin from getting wet with the sweat we generate through exercise. The materials used for the first layer garments are synthetic: polypropylene and Capilene. We will never bring cotton underwear on an expedition; however, merino wool underwear was developed recently. This is a giant step in the history of mountaineering clothing. The reason is that this material not only has the ability to keep your skin dry from sweat, but also a high ability to retain heat generated by exercise. Merino wool garments are much more expensive and the alternative to propylene and capilene is still an excellent option.

The second layer

It is the garment responsible for keeping you warm. Today there are many material alternatives, such as fleece, light fiber or down-filled jackets and softshell, to name the most important. Today, all specialty brands offer a wide variety of garments that fall into this category, with varying levels of integrated technology.

The third layer

It is responsible for providing us insulation from external conditions, such as wind, rain, snow. This category includes waterproof and breathable membranes, such as Gore-tex Pro, Futurelight, eVent. To participate in our expeditions, you will need both a good, hooded jacket and good trousers made from these materials.

UPPER BODY

Long breathable or synthetic underwear top not made of cotton

for traveling in Patagonia, a long base layer top will be worn the entire time, including hikes and acclimatization climbs. Even on peak days, so it's important to choose one that works well for you. A zip neck top is nice for ventilation during those hot days further down the line. A lightweight or medium-weight top made of wool or synthetic is usually the right choice. Those will be your first layer. Bring 3 or 4, light to medium. Choose them that are extremely comfortable, not too tight. This is also the sleeping item, along with underwear briefs.

In the outdoors, a hat is an essential piece of equipment to protect you from the wind and cold. It helps prevent hypothermia because it significantly reduces body heat loss. A technical hat should be made of a quick-drying, breathable and moisture-wicking material. Additionally, the material should provide good insulation by trapping air heated by the body. Modern hats are made from synthetic materials, such as polyester fleece. Or natural materials like Merino wool. Merino wool is becoming increasingly popular for mountaineering clothing because it is soft to the touch, breathable and odor resistant. Bring a lightweight one, like the Merino Helmet, which fits easily under your helmet. Also, a heavier one, like the classic Brodeo cap or similar.

Skin protection

Sunscreen face protection (factor 50+).jpg

Facial sunscreen (factor 50+)

At high altitudes, ultraviolet (UV) radiation is much less filtered by the atmosphere and is therefore much more harmful. Even in cloudy weather, up to 90% of UV rays are not filtered! If snow is found at high altitudes, the risk is even higher: up to 85% of sunlight is reflected on snow, compared to only 15% on sand. Therefore, good sun protection is essential.

We advise you to

· La Roche Posay Anthelios 60 Dark Sun Milk

· Vichy Capital Soleil SPF 60 Transparent Soft Sun Lotion

The water bottles

Hikers can be divided into two categories: people who prefer to hydrate with hot drinks and those who would drink cold ones even when in freezing environments. If you belong to the second category, our advice is to have both water bottles and thermos.

The decision on how many bottles and thermoses is all yours. Our advice is no less than one liter and no more than two. Water bottles must be lightweight, have a very secure screw cap, simple to use. Made of safe material that does not retain flavors.

Binoculars

For your nature trips in search of wildlife, bird watching or stargazing, binoculars are an essential piece of equipment. Binoculars consist of two tubes that focus light through objective lenses, allowing us to clearly observe distant objects.

To simplify the purchasing process, it's best to focus on two key specifications: magnification and lens size. These parameters directly affect the clarity and distance of your observations.

High-quality binoculars not only provide a better viewing experience but also help protect our eyes. For users who will be using binoculars outdoors for extended periods, choosing a high-quality pair with eye-protecting features is especially important.
